Naples (Italy) garbage epidemic
May 23, 2007HOW TERRIBLE!
Residents of the Italian city of Naples have been torching piles of rotting rubbish in the streets amid a worsening refuse crisis.
Most of the area’s landfill sites are full, meaning that rubbish collectors have not been doing their rounds. The government in Rome has identified a number of potential dumps around the city – but local people have protested against attempts to start work on them.
History provides a footnote to underline the seriousness of the crisis facing Naples, our correspondent says. In 1873 it was the last major European city to suffer a cholera epidemic.

What’s crazy is that one of the reasons the landfill is filled to the brim is because the environmentalists in Naples said more landfills would hurt the environment! Perhaps their plan didn’t entirely work. Here’s the Reuters clip on the story: http://www.ibctoday.com/News/ViewNewsItem.aspx?rootVideoPanelType=1&newsItemId=25510
Thanks John appreciate your comment and the clip. Comeback and visit again.
maybe the problem is that there is no more space to fill with crap; recycling, reducing, reusing. The whole planet is crapped, these are signs that composting and being responsible is part of the answer; we are 3 at home and by recycling and composting, not buying useless crap, we’re down to a bag of month… cheese wrappers and other wrapping we still haven’T found to reduce or recycle.
TIme to change ! 6.6 billion people can’t manage that much stuff…
Yes, it’s wrappers that you can’t compost are a problem…everything you buy has some sort of wrapper… I don’t know how you got down to a bag a month! It’s very hard but I congratulate your trying.
After listening to NPR this morning 1/4/08. It stated that the Mafia controls Naples, had been accepting everyone else’s garbage for big $$. Has run out of space for their own. So now locals are burning it.
The BIG problem is the cheese (Mozzarella) thats produced there. The burning of trash (=pollution) -could become a hazard to their nations big export.
WOW, I think I’ll be asking for a different cheese for awhile…
Will, don’t you know there is no Mafia? Ha! I love Mozzarella cheese!
Those folks should organize and start carting that trash right to the front gates of that incinerator. Imagine all the rats, vermin and disease that is soon going to infest their homes. The garbage is at least two stories high in places! Why would anyone stand to live in such filth and not revolt against the government? Amazing.
nancy, I don’t know if Naples has done anything about it since May of last year…
I also think it is the mentality of the people. Not taking care of other problems first and just adding one on top of another. And after having lived there It just seems to take forever for anyone to make a decision.
Linda, have you lived there? I think when people are overwhelmed with anything they find it very hard to take care of business…
To those of you who are criticizing the “people” for not doing something about the trash, you don’t know what you are talking about. Also, it is no longer the “mafia”. They are now called “Camorristi.” Get a copy of the book by Roberto Saviano “Gomorrah” who is currently under police protection for naming names and exposing the heinous crimes of the Camorra.Their brutality is directed to anyone who does not fall in line with them. They get their heads blown off, after being tortured. Read the book!
I live in Naples. This place needs to be the next ground zero. What it boils down to is no one wants to take responsibility for the problem, and further more no one really wants to fix it. Quite honestly, it is sad that one Region can bring a country to such a pandemic low. There is no telling what the long term effects of being around this stuff is going to be, but trust me, there is no safe haven from it.
Rose and Mike, I’m sorry for the terrible problem there in Naples. I’ve talked about this with my sister-in-law and she says it’s an on-going problem that needs to be solved but she doesn’t know how!
