Interesting road signs

August 12, 2007

While we were in Massachussetts a few months ago we ran into (not literally!) these road signs:

These signs were completely unfamiliar to us. The first sign “No Jake Braking” was incomprehensible. I’ve since searched the Internet and found nothing.

Does anyone out there know what it means? A Massachusetts resident must know, although, the residents we were with didn’t.

The next sign “Road Hump,” I suppose, means there’s a BUMP in the road. Why HUMP? It’s not really wrong of course, I guess, it’s a hump too, but BUMP is a better word, no?

There was also another sign (and I don’t have a picture — just never had enough time to get it. But in a week I’m going up to Mass. again and I’ll definitely get a picture) and it said “THICKLY SETTLED” Another sign I’d never seen. But here’s what the web site on Massachusetts Roads says:

“A ‘Thickly Settled’ district is an area where houses or other buildings are located, on average, less than 200 feet apart.” If you find a “Thickly Settled” sign in Massachusetts, don’t think of it as a quaint sign. Consider it as a 30 mile an hour speed trap (bolding mine) because the law states that speeds over 30 mph in a “Thickly Settled” or business district are not considered reasonable and proper.

I did think the sign “quaint” and wondered why it didn’t say POPULATED AREA. But the more I consider the sign it does sound nicer than the one I propose. Maybe it has more class, and it makes me think of colonial days.

Here’s one more sign that I found on the ‘net, it’s funny:
