In honor of St. Patrick’s Day which is coming on Monday I present the work of Rita Duffy from Gormley’s Fine Art, Ireland:
Born in Belfast in 1959. She received her BA at the Art and Design Centre and then her MA at the University of Ulster. After finishing Art College Duffy began working as a sign writer, then a set painter for the Lyric Theatre, Belfast.
Context, authenticity and draftsmanship are fundamental to Duffy’s work. Her work is a response to both personal and shared experiences, which have arisen from the socio-political situation in Northern Ireland. Much of her work is autobiographical, addressing her experience growing up Catholic and Female in the North.

Morning 1965
Acrylic and pencil on canvas
”I had to leave out a lot of things that one expects to see in a painting”, Martin has said of this work. ”I was painting about happiness and bliss and they are very simple states of mind I guess. Morning is a wonderful dawn, soft and fresh.” She began making delicate hand-drawn grids in 1960. This painting is based on a rectangular system of co-ordinates, but the total effect is like an atmospheric veil. (From the display caption September 2004)

I have the pleasure of presenting to you the art of David Bradbury
Caption: This painting is of Sam and James Bourne. This was a wedding present commission from Kirstin Hodgkinson. Sam has a sandwich in her mouth in this picture and does not have some strange affliction. If it doesn’t look like a sandwich then that’s probably because I ran out of white paint and the deadline was close. God knows what they think of it, but Good Luck and a Happy Marriage to you! (David Bradbury)
