Did He Really Say That?

January 17, 2008

huckabee.jpg

I can’t let this go. Huckabee speaking about human life and marriage said recently:

“I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution,” Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. “But I believe it’s a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that’s what we need to do — to amend the Constitution so it’s in God’s standards rather than try to change God’s standards so it lines up with some contemporary view…”

You know, if some other politician said this he’d/she’d be run out town. I know when Huckabee was governor of Arkansas he was a much more middle-of-the-roader, centrist, than this quote above suggests. But HE JUST CAN”T GO AROUND SAYING THINGS LIKE THAT!

He knows that separation of church and state is a lynchpin of our democratic way of life…

Come’on Mike, stop pandering to the evangelicals. You won’t win that way…

Mitt wins; Hillary too

Romney secures Michigan victory…

The GOP race gets more confusing after Romney’s Michigan victory.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton won a meaningless Michigan presidential primary Tuesday night, a contest held in violation of party rules as she and her Democratic rivals shared a debate stage 2,000 miles distant.

Thursday Thirteen #2

Thirteen Reasons Elizabeth Kucinich should be First Lady of America:

She has a tongue stud.

She’s a 29-year-old hippie chick from Upminster at the end of the London Underground’s District line.

She is able to hang out with the likes of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama backstage at the Democratic presidential debates. “There’s a kind of camaraderie,” she said.

She’s a 6-foot-tall willowy redhead who has been compared to Arwen Evenstar, the “Lord of the Rings” character played in the films by Liv Tyler.

She towers over her diminutive husband and she’s not bothered by their 31-year age difference.

She’s been a volunteer worker for the American Monetary Institute, an offbeat group dedicated to reforming the “unjust monetary system.”

She mesmerized Kucinich with an e-mail with her usual signature line from “Kama Sutra,” one of her favorite films: “Knowing love, I shall allow all things to come and go, to be as supple as the wind and take everything that comes with great courage. My heart is as open as the sky.”

The actress Shirley MacLaine attended their wedding.

“If Dennis were elected, they would make a great team,” Elizabeth said.

“Can you imagine what it would be like to have real love in the White House and a true union between the masculine and the feminine?” Elizabeth said.

There were clues in her childhood that they were destined for each other, Elizabeth believes. She lived with her mother, a divorcée, on the outskirts of London in a farm laborer’s dilapidated house that was lovingly restored over the years. “The address was 4, Dennis’s Cottages, Dennis’s Lane,” she said.

She loves New Age philosophy.

She’s not a vegan and she has great respect for the Royal Family. Diana is her heroine.

Gov. Bill Richardson blows it…

Bill Richardson Calls Homosexuality “A Choice” at Gay Rights Forum

Posted by Pam Spaulding at 4:52 AM on August 10, 2007.

Pam Spaulding: I haven’t seen anyone fumble a question like this so badly.

This post, written by Pam Spaulding, originally appeared on Pam’s House Blend

[UPDATE (10:30 PM, PT): I spoke with Governor Richardson just a few moments ago to discuss his remarks at this evening's forum. See below.]

Let’s just say it right now – Bill Richardson self-immolated tonight on live TV. I haven’t seen anyone fumble a question like this so badly.

MS. ETHERIDGE: Thank you.

Do you think homosexuality is a choice, or is it biological?

GOV. RICHARDSON: It’s a choice. It’s –

MS. ETHERIDGE: I don’t know if you understand the question. (Soft laughter.) Do you think I — a homosexual is born that way, or do you think that around seventh grade we go, “Ooh, I want to be gay”?

GOV. RICHARDSON: Well, I — I’m not a scientist. It’s — you know, I don’t see this as an issue of science or definition. I see gays and lesbians as people as a matter of human decency. I see it as a matter of love and companionship and people loving each other. You know I don’t like to categorize people. I don’t like to, like, answer definitions like that that, you know, perhaps are grounded in science or something else that I don’t understand.

Karen Ocamb said there were gasps, and hisses in the audience.

What a terrible, dumb mistake! I know Richardson is in favor of domestic partnerships. He worked toward legislation in New Mexico for just that. Has he ever been asked before about this? Guess not. Check out the UPDATE below.

_____________________________________________________________

UPDATE:

Governor Richardson called the author to discuss his comments that homosexuality is a choice.

He says that was confused by the question, saying that it was tricky and it threw him off that it was asked in the context of biology and science. He said “I knew when I was walking out of the parking lot that I had said something in error. My staff alerted me that I needed to set the record straight.”

He went on to say, “This is something you are born with, and regardless of whether there is conflict about the science of it (homosexuality), I support full and equal rights. I fully support domestic partnerships.”

But he doesn’t support marriage for gays, hmmm.

A Push to Save New York

ONE GOOD PUSH TO SAVE NEW YORK

While I’m not a Republican and would never vote for Rudy for President, nor would I advocate bumping off Hillary, this photo,  received in my e-mail from my cousin in North Carolina, CRACKED ME UP.

P.S. If anyone can tell me what Hillary is holding her hand I’d appreciate it… :)

What GOP candidates got wrong…

June 8, 2007

From Factcheck.org:

Third Time ‘Round for GOP Hopefuls

Pollsters will inform us whether the third time was the charm for any of these candidates in the eyes of potential voters. All we can do is remind you not to believe everything you hear.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney committed the biggest factual fouls of the night, misleadingly asserting:

* That we went to war in Iraq because Saddam Hussein refused to allow weapons inspectors to come in
* That there’s an ocean of difference between his Massachusetts health plan and those “government takeover” plans of “every Democrat” running for president and
* That Russia’s income from oil exports is vastly larger than it actually is.

Other candidates committed factual trespass, too. Sen. John McCain of Arizona ignored the waste disposal issue when he praised nuclear power for being green, for instance, and Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback exaggerated the number of illegal immigrants living in the United States.

See the Republican candidates on YouTube.

You can read what the Democrats got wrong in their debate here.
